April 12 , 2007 – In just three months, HFA (The Harry Fox Agency), a leading U.S. music rights licensing organization, has already issued over 1.8 million licenses for 360,000 songs from its catalog to LyricFind, the premier source of lyrics online.
The various licenses encompass digital uses for lyrics such as downloads, integration with online music services and devices, and enhanced search capability for music catalogs. Applications of this can be seen in LyricFind’s recent agreement with All Music Guide, which will incorporate lyric search and display capabilities on devices and websites.
“HFA has been able to process a huge volume of license requests for us in a very short time,” said Darryl Ballantyne, President, LyricFind. “Having HFA handle the copyright clearance, licensing, and royalty distributions is a cost-effective solution for us. HFA has enabled us to work with thousands of publishers we would have otherwise never been able to reach.”
“Bringing a new digital music-related business online requires enormous scale right from the start,” said Gary Churgin, HFA President & CEO. “HFA’s efficient licensing systems help businesses like LyricFind have the critical mass that they need from Day One.”
Traditionally a mechanical licensing agent, HFA has been offering its publishers other licensing opportunities, such as LyricFind, that can create additional revenue from their catalogs. In addition, this licensing arrangement was extended to HFA’s affiliate music publishers on a commission-free basis.
Established in 1927 by the National Music Publishers’ Association, HFA represents almost 35,000 music publishers for their licensing needs in the United States, issuing licenses and collecting and distributing the associated royalties. In addition to being the premier mechanical licensing agent in the U.S., which includes CDs, ringtones, digital downloads, interactive streams, limited downloads and more, HFA is dedicated to finding new ways for its affiliates publishers to recognize value for their catalogs, including lyrics and guitar tablature. Further, HFA provides collection and monitoring services to its publisher clients for music distributed and sold in over 95 territories around the world.
