Conclusion
I hope this has dispelled many of the common misconceptions about Napster and the music industry as a whole. And maybe, just maybe, someone who can do something about it will read this.
Napster will die, but others will take its place and continue on. In the next few years, we'll see many attempts to duplicate Napster's success in building users, and different ways of compensating the copyright holders (notice I didn't say "artists"). While record companies as they are now may not be the way of the future, they are a reality now and thus a necessary evil.
Don't take your frustrations out on the artists. Remember, they are the most important part of the equation - so please support them, either through concert tickets, merchandise, Fairtunes, or, at the very least, help pay down their debt by buying a CD.
There are ways to make everyone happy. There is a solution that compensates the labels, and at the same time keeps consumers happy and retains the possibility of free music. And if any of you big label execs happens to be reading this, give me a call, and I'll tell you what that solution is.
